What types of facial implants are available?

If you would like to restore the youthful shape of your face, facial implants are a good option.  Facial implants can improve the contours of your face, and make it look fuller and more youthful.  But what types of facial implants are available.

What are facial implants?

Facial implants are solid materials that are inserted below the skin to enhance facial contours, and provide balance and definition.  Facial implants are specially designed for use in the face, and are available in a variety of shapes and sizes.  They are typically made of a non-toxic material like silicone (learn more).

What types of facial implants are available?

Facial implants for the cheeks, chin, and jaws, are the most common options available.

Cheek implants

Cheek implants add volume to flat or sunken cheeks, and give the cheeks a higher, fuller appearance.  The cheeks lose volume with age, but strong cheekbones give the face a lifted, younger look.

Chin implants

Chin implants can enhance a weak or recessed chin, and create an attractive balance with the other facial features.   Chin implants increase the projection of the chin, and this makes the neck look leaner and more youthful.

Jaw implants

Jaw implants add definition to the jawline, and give the face a more balanced appearance, because it increases the width of the jawline.

How Much Does Botox Cost?

Are the frown lines and crow’s feet on your face getting you down?  Botox treatment is a wonderful way to rejuvenate your face and take years off your appearance.  But although botox may seem like a very attractive solution, you may be wondering – How much does botox cost.

Botox Cosmetic

Botox cosmetic has become a popular minimally invasive cosmetic treatment, because of its effectiveness in minimizing dynamic wrinkles and reducing signs of aging. Dynamic wrinkles are formed by repeated facial expressions such as frowning, squinting, and smiling, giving rise to frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.    Botox is an injectable treatment that contains very small amounts of purified bacteria.

How much does botox cost

Botox costs an average of $550 per treatment area.  However, the cost can range anywhere from $25 to $1,150, depending on the specific area being treated.

Practices price botox either by the treatment area or by the number of units patients receive.  A unit of botox can cost between $10 and $25.  The number of units used varies based on the area being treated (click here to learn more).

It takes an average of 20 units of botox to treat the forehead lines and frown lines, and about 15 units to treat crow’s feet.  However, the right amount of botox is customized for each patient, and other factors such as the strength of the facial muscles and the severity of the wrinkles, can impact the amount of botox required (read more).

The results of botox last approximately 3-5 months.

What is the best treatment for facial rejuvenation?

Would you like to refresh your look, but you’re hesitant to undergo surgery?  There are several non-surgical cosmetic treatments on the market that can rejuvenate your appearance, and give your face a nice healthy glow.  But what is the best treatment for facial rejuvenation.

What is the best treatment for facial rejuvenation?

The best facial rejuvenation treatment is one that will minimize the effects of aging and too much sun on the face, and restore the health and youthful appearance of the skin.  There are numerous facial rejuvenation techniques now available that deal with skin problems, and beautify the skin.  But what’s the best.

If your goal is to boost skin health and restore a more youthful look, microneedling is certainly an excellent choice.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling or collagen induction therapy is a minimally invasive technique in which a device containing small, thin, needles is used to create microscopic injuries in the skin.  These controlled wounds help to stimulate the production of collagen, which is undoubtedly the most effective way to revitalize the appearance of the skin.  Increasing collagen improves the firmness and elasticity of the skin, reduces sun damage, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation, and refines pores.

Microneedling with PRP

Microneedling is often combined with PRP therapy for optimal facial rejuvenation.  PRP is prepared from a sample of blood drawn from the patient, which is spun in a centrifuge to isolate the platelets.  These platelets are then applied to the face after microneedling.  PRP stimulates collagen, and accelerates the skin’s healing process (learn more).

What to look for in the best oral surgeon

If you have to undergo oral surgery, finding the best surgeon will ensure that you have a safe, comfortable experience.  Determining the surgeon that’s the right fit for your needs doesn’t have to be complicated, you simply have to do some research among the preferred surgeons in your area, and know what to look for.

What to look for in the best oral surgeon

  • Training and credentials

Review the educational achievements and memberships of the oral surgeon.  Choose a surgeon that graduated from an accredited dental school, and therefore has the required dental training and credentials.  Additional training is also valuable and helpful when performing complex procedures, so make sure that the surgeon also meets these criteria.

  • Experience

The oral surgeon must have the experience and specialty training needed to perform the procedure you’re interested in.  A surgeon with years in the field will have more expertise, and is typically well-informed about the latest technological advances in oral surgery.

  • Good bedside manner

Choose an oral surgeon with a good bedside manner, as they will provide a more comfortable experience for you.  The surgeon should be willing to listen to your concerns, and address any issues you have about the operation.  Look at reviews posted by past patients and take note of their opinions of the surgeon, as well as the surgical process.

It’s also important to verify that the operation will be done in a fully accredited surgical facility (click here to learn more).

How to Pick the Best Facial Surgeon

If you find yourself in need of a facial surgeon, it’s essential to choose the right professional for the job.  Be sure to select a surgeon with the training and experience to deliver the best possible outcome.  So how should you pick the best facial surgeon?

When choosing a facial surgeon you want to consider the following:

  1. Board certification

Certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (ABPS) verifies that the surgeon is appropriately qualified to perform facial plastic surgery.  Surgeons certified by the ABPS have undergone the requisite education and training, and are held to high standards within their profession.  The surgeon should also meet criteria relating to patient care and satisfaction, peer reviews, and publications.

  • Experience

Select a facial surgeon that has a lot of experience performing the procedure you’re looking to have done.  Surgeons that have been doing facial plastic surgery for many years develop specialized expertise through that experience, and are therefore able to deliver good results.

  • Portfolio of Before-and-after photos

Be sure to review the surgeon’s portfolio of before-and-after photos of similar patients who have undergone the procedure you’re interested in.  This will also help you assess their expertise, as well as their sense of beauty and aesthetic style.

  • Customer Service

Choose a surgeon that takes the time to listen to your aesthetic goals, and understands the results you are looking for.   In addition, the surgeon and their support staff should make you feel welcome and valued.

Where are the Scars For a Facelift?

Would you like to look as young as you feel?  A facelift may be just what you need.  However, since facelift surgery is an invasive procedure there are incisions involved, so patients are typically worried about where the scars will be.

What is a facelift?

A facelift or rhytidectomy is a procedure that is done to rejuvenate the appearance of the face and neck.  It tightens sagging facial skin, reduces the appearance of lines and folds around the mouth, and minimizes jowls.

Where are the scars for a facelift?

The location of the scars for a facelift depends on the placement of the incisions.  The incisions for a traditional facelift are typically made behind the ear, in front of the ear, and along the hairline.   However, the surgeon may modify the incision pattern, based on the patient’s desired facial improvement.

Ideally, facelift incisions should follow the natural anatomy of the ear, so that the resulting scars are virtually imperceptible.  When facelift surgery is done properly it’s almost impossible to see the scars.

Factors that can affect the final outcome of the scar after a facelift include the patient’s skin type, the length of the incisions, and the skill of the surgeon.

Facelift consultation

If you are considering facelift surgery it’s important to discuss the location of the incisions early on, so that you know the type of scars to expect.  It is also essential to consult with an experienced board-certified plastic surgeon that understands the nuances of facelift incisions.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

Laser hair removal is generally accepted as a safe, effective way to get beautiful, hair-free skin.   It involves removing unwanted hair by exposing it to pulses of laser light.  However, one of the first questions people interested in having the procedure done ask is – How long does laser hair removal last?

How does laser hair removal work

The laser light selectively targets the melanin (dark pigment) found at the root of the hair follicle, and it absorbs the laser light.  The heat that is generated damages the center of hair growth in the follicle, and this causes the hair to fall out within 1-2 weeks.

How many laser hair removal treatments do I need?

Long term hair reduction requires multiple sessions because hair grows in phases, so lasers are not able to remove every hair follicle in a single session.  Consequently, patients typically need to undergo 6-8 laser hair removal treatments for maximum results.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

How long laser hair removal lasts depends on the individual’s skin type and hair growth cycle, so it’s difficult to predict how long patients will enjoy hair-free skin.  However, patients can generally expect laser hair removal to last for a few months.

Patients may need follow-up treatments once the recommended laser hair removal treatments are complete, because hair may regrow if the hair follicle was not destroyed.  People with a short hair growth cycle will experience faster hair regrowth.  The hair that regrows will therefore have to be treated in order to maintain hair-free results.

10 Things you need to know about laser tattoo removal

If you are planning to undergo laser tattoo removal, it’s important to get informed about the procedure, so that you can easily separate the myths from the facts.   Below are 10 things you need to know about laser tattoo removal.

  1. The process takes several months:  Depending on the technology being used, it can take anywhere from 6-8 sessions to fade a tattoo, and sessions are spaced 4-8 weeks apart.  Other factors such as the size of the tattoo and the colors used, will impact the duration of the process.
  2. Lasers break down the ink.  Lasers break up the tattoo ink into tiny particles, which are then flushed from the system.
  3. It will hurt.  Laser tattoo removal is painful, but the level of pain often varies depending on the type of laser used.  The pain felt during laser tattoo removal is often likened to having an elastic band snapped against the skin.
  4. It may leave a scar.  There may be some scarring left behind from the tattoo after laser tattoo removal is complete.
  5. There is no downtime.  Patients are typically able to resume normal activities right after laser tattoo removal.
  6. Results are not immediate.   It may take multiple treatments before the tattoo starts to fade away.
  7. Advanced technology can speed up the process.  Advanced lasers like the PicoSure utilize picosecond technology, which is faster and more efficient.
  8. Treatment sessions are short.  A typical laser tattoo removal session takes 5-15 minutes.
  9. There are side-effects.  Redness, tenderness, swelling, and hyperpigmentation, are some of the side-effects that can occur after treatment.
  10. Black ink is easier to remove: black in is usually the easiest tattoo color to remove.

What is the difference between Botox, Dysport and Xeomin?

If you are looking for an effective treatment for dynamic wrinkles, botox, dysport, and xeomin are all great options.  While botox is the most popular choice, dysport and xeomin have increased in popularity in recent years.  But what is the difference between botox, dysport, and xeomin.

Botox, dysport, and xeomin

Botox, dysport, and xeomin are neurotoxins that are used to treat dynamic wrinkles i.e. forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines.  Dynamic wrinkles are expression lines that form as a result of the frequent movement of the facial muscles during expressions such as laughing, smiling, and squinting.

How do they work?

Botox, dysport, and xeomin work by temporarily relaxing the muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles to form.  When they are injected into the specific facial muscle they block the transmission of nerve signals, which prevents the muscles from contracting.  As a result, the overlying wrinkles soften over time.

What is the Difference between botox, dysport, and xeomin?

Botox, dysport, and xeomin are all different brands of botulinum toxin type A.  Botox and dysport contain additives, so patients can potentially develop antibodies to them, which can prevent them from having the desired effect.  However, this is not a problem with xeomin as it does not contain any additives.

Since botox and dysport have additives they have to be refrigerated before use, but xeomin does not require refrigeration.

Xeomin takes effect after about 4 days, but botox and dysport have an earlier onset of action.

What are Symptoms of Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins may not be harmful, but they can certainly be unsightly and embarrassing.  Many people with varicose veins experience few or no symptoms, but others may have aches and pain in the legs.  However, complications can occur that can lead to serious conditions so it’s important to know the symptoms of varicose veins.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that are typically blue, red, or dark purple in color.  Varicose veins are visible through the skin, and are usually seen on the legs.

What causes varicose veins?

Varicose veins occur when the one-way valves in the veins are damaged. These valves ensure that the blood moves in one direction, towards the heart.  However, if the valves fail to work properly, blood leaks backwards and pools in the veins, causing them to bulge and become enlarged.

What are symptoms of varicose veins?

Pain in the legs is one of the most common symptoms of varicose veins, along with the following:

  • Heaviness in the legs often accompanied by sensations of burning or itching.
  • Muscle cramps or fatigue in the lower legs and feet.
  • Skin discoloration around the ankles.
  • Skin ulcers.
  • Swelling in the ankles.
  • Blood clots.

The symptoms of varicose veins may be more severe in individuals that are obese or lead a sedentary lifestyle.  Fluctuating hormone levels as well as standing for long periods, can also cause the symptoms to get worse (learn more).

Are you experiencing symptoms of varicose veins?  It is best to visit a vein specialist for an accurate diagnosis, so that you can get the required treatment.
