How Does Laser Treatment for Varicose Veins Work?

Are varicose veins a problem for you? If yes, you’re not alone, because varicose veins are a concern for a considerable amount of the population. Fortunately, varicose veins can be safely treated with laser treatment.

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are twisted, enlarged veins that are usually seen on the legs and feet. They are blue or dark purple in color, and are typically a sign that the valves in the blood vessels have malfunctioned.

Laser treatment for varicose veins

Laser treatment for varicose veins is known as endovenous laser treatment (EVLT). It is a minimally invasive procedure that is used to close the saphenous vein, which is the main vein linked to varicose veins.

How does EVLT work?

EVLT is an in office procedure that is done under local anesthesia. Ultrasound is used to identify the vein, and then a tiny puncture is made in the skin through which a catheter is inserted into the vein. A thin laser fiber is put inside the catheter and local anesthetic administered. After this the laser energy is delivered to the entire length of the damaged vein, injuring the vein wall and causing the vein to close. Blood will therefore not be able to flow through the vein, but will be diverted to healthy veins (learn more).

What can I expect after EVLT?

There will be some bruising on the leg after the procedure, and compression stocking are worn during recovery. Most patients are able to return to normal activities right away, but strenuous activities should be avoided for 1-2 weeks.
