What makes a good plastic surgeon, and what should you look for?

So you are thinking about doing cosmetic surgery, and you need a good plastic surgeon, but you’re not sure where to start or what makes a good plastic surgeon. Here are some criteria you may want to consider:

Board Certification

If you are contemplating plastic surgery, then make sure that the plastic surgeon is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery.  This is important, because this certification indicates that the surgeon has the requisite education and skills to perform cosmetic surgery.

A board certified surgeon is required to do 2 to 3 years of plastic surgery training, in addition to 2 to 5 years of training in general surgery. Board certified plastic surgeons also have to commit to continued training, and also meet specific criteria of the American Board of Plastic Surgery.

Check out their record

Find out if the plastic surgeon has been disciplined or sued in the past. State licensing boards will disclose any malpractice judgments or disciplinary actions, taken out against a surgeon.

Experience

Find out how long they have been in business, and ensure that they have the surgical experience in the procedure you are interested in doing.  A surgeon that has been working longer will have finer skills, and be better at his craft.

Ask the surgeon to show you ‘before’ and ‘after’ photos of past patients. Make certain that all your questions are answered suitably, and you are aware of all the pros and cons of the procedure.

Now that you know what makes a good plastic surgeon, you can make the necessary checks and research before contemplating surgery. If you are in Baltimore or Washington DC areas then you can set up a consultation with Nia Banks, MD. Dr. Banks is a highly respected plastic surgeon, with a wealth of experience performing a range of cosmetic procedures.
